Clayton State Presents Program on the 1956 Hungarian Revolution
Morrow, Ga., Oct. 21, 2008 -- The Clayton State University Office of International Programs and the Clayton State University History Society (http://studentorg.c layton.edu/historyso ciety/) are presenting a program on the 1956 Hungarian Revolution on Thursday, Oct. 23, from 11 a.m. to noon in room 272 of the James M. Baker University Center.
John E. Parkerson, Jr., director of the Office of International Programs and the Honorary Consul of Hungary, representing the Republic of Hungary in Georgia, Tennessee, North Carolina, and South Carolina, says it will be a program that illustrates vividly that seminal moment in history when the Hungarian forces of freedom and democracy, many of them university students, rallied Budapest and other cities around Hungary in an attempt to replace the repressive Soviet-sponsored Communist government.
The program, which is being given in connection with the opening that same day of a special Clayton State Library photo exhibit on the Hungarian Revolution, will be followed by a 30-minute open discussion. The entire program is free and open to the public.
Two prominent Hungarian-Americans will give the program. Edith Lauer, who escaped Hungary in 1956 following the crushed revolution; and her daughter, Andrea Lauer Rice; will share their first-hand experiences from the Revolution through film clips of the events, hard-copy display items, and power point-led discussion.
Lauer is a board member of the Hungarian-American Coalition (http://www.hacusa.o rg), an influential Hungarian-American advocacy group based in Washington. Rice is a second-generation Hungarian-American who also is founder of Lauer Learning (http://www.LauerLea rning.com). For an excerpt from Rice’s personal story, go to http://www.freedomfi ghter56.com/en_stori es_1family.html.
“I have heard these speakers previously, and they have an incredibly compelling story to relate,” says Parkerson. “The 1956 Hungarian Revolution in many ways was an early indicator of the events that were to rock the world in the late 1980s and early 1990s as the old Soviet block and its client states in central and eastern Europe disintegrated under the failed Communist experiment. “
For additional history on this subject, go to http://www.freedomfi ghter56.com/en_histo ry.html.
A unit of the University System of Georgia, Clayton State University is an outstanding comprehensive metropolitan university located 15 miles southeast of downtown Atlanta.
