e Festival's Website:\n\nHere are a few origins of phrases to tickle your f
ancy!\n\nCHEW THE FAT\nIn olden times\, a host would offer his guests a pie
ce of bacon\, which was stored above the fireplace in the parlor\, so they
could chew the fat during their visit.\n\nGIVING SOMEONE THE COLD SHOULDER\
nWhen a guests would over stay their welcome as house guests\, the hosts wo
uld (instead of feeding them good\, warm meals) give their too-long staying
guests the worst part of the animal\, not warmed\, but the COLD SHOULDER.\
n\nUPPER CRUST\nVisitors to the Anne Hathaway’s cottage (near Stratford upo
n Avon) are given this explanation while looking at the bread oven beside t
he fireplace in the kitchen: “The bread was put\, as a raw lump of dough\,
straight into the bread oven. No bread tin\, it just sits on the floor of t
he oven. The oven is heated by the fire and is very hot at the bottom. When
the bread is done baking and taken out to cool\,\nthe base of the loaf is
overcooked black and also dirty. The top of the loaf is done just right\, a
nd still clean. The bottom of the loaf is for the servants to eat\, while t
he upper crust is for the master of the house.\n\nREASON FOR CANOPY BEDS\nM
ost English homes of old had “thatched” roofs. Canopies were placed over th
e beds to keep bugs\, mice\, dirt\, rain\, etc. from disturbing your sleep!
(An example of a thatched roof can be found at the Georgia Renaissance Fes
tival)\n\nRAINING CATS AND DOGS\nIn medieval times\, the houses were low wi
th low hanging thatched roofs and the dogs and cats used to climb up there\
, one after the other. In heavy downpours\, the said animals would tumble f
rom their perches\, past the windows and fall into the ditches compelling t
he ‘tankarded’ or ‘bombed’ residents to exclaim\, “Aaargh\, it’s raining ca
ts and dogs.”\n\nLET THE CAT OUT OF THE BAG\nThe phrase is a reference to a
n old scam in which a cat would be surreptitiously substituted for a suckli
ng pig that had just been purchased at market during the Renaissance. The c
at would be placed in the bag in the hopes that the customer would not look
into it until they were some distance away.\n\nFairburn\, GA 30213 - USA\
